From OPRA to Retail: How we integrated one of the most demanding options data feeds into our retail options analytics platform
We decided to take on the challenge of low-latency delivery of OPRA's entire options data feed, and transformed it into an options analytics platform which gives retail investors an edge.
Behind the data
Behind every options price you see is an enormous stream of data. The OPRA feed, which powers all U.S. options markets, pushes out tens of millions of updates every second and hundreds of billions each day.
Handling this isn't so simple, which is why most have shied away from the task. It requires high-grade infrastructure, massive network capacity, and the ability to process a constant stream of information in real-time. Translating that into something fast, reliable, and easy to use for everyday investors is therefore a significant technical challenge.
At OptiView, we chose to take on that challenge…and deliver. As an official, licensed OPRA data redistributor, we're able to provide access to the full feed of 15-minute delayed equities and options data. Engineering a system to store, process, and translate this data into a retail-first experience required significant engineering effort.
Today, we process millions of data points every second to deliver this information with low latency to our users.
OptiView data offering
So what data is on offer then?
The following list gives a non-exhaustive overview of which 15-min delayed data can be accessed in the OptiView platform:
- Bid and ask quotes
- Greeks
- Historical implied volatility
- Realized volatility
- Trade volume
- Open interest
- Moneyness and ITM probability
- Underlying sector and market cap
- P/E ratio
- …. and a range of other technical and fundamental indicators across options and underlyings.
It's also important to note, OptiView is a licensed data provider, meaning it is legally authorized to redistribute and display official OPRA data. This ensures full compliance while giving users confidence that the data they see comes directly from the primary source.
In addition, OptiView can provide live market data when users connect to their brokerage account. By authorizing a limited access token which allows OptiView to pull live-data from the respective brokerage, users can enhance their trading experience within the platform.
Turning one of the most demanding market data feeds in the world into a seamless retail experience was no small task, but it's exactly what we set out to do. By bridging institutional-grade infrastructure with intuitive retail-first design, we're making options data more accessible than ever.
And better yet, we're only just getting started.
